Alpha Bar

Something I should look into.

"AlphaBar is a year-long social club meeting every other Wednesday
night at 8pm. We’ll start at the top of the Alphabet and hit a bar
bi-weekly until we’ve gone to a bar that starts with every letter in
the alphabet. Our mission is to tour SF, pack some cool bars and most
importantly…make some new friends"

Knight News Challenge Round 2

It seems just two posts ago I was writing about the Knight News Challenge.

Originally the challenge was just an outlet for me to think like an entrepreneurial journalist, with ideas like  CopyCamp.Us and Spot Journalism. Now it will become more.

I have been informed that all three of the ideas I submitted have made it to the second round. I believe this is also the last round before winners are chosen and grants given.

I have two weeks to work on two of the ideas and three weeks to work on the last.

Luckily, because of my youthful age (25), I was able to sneak into the "young creators" category – where I hope the competition is not as rough.

I have not won a thing, nor am I guaranteed anything. I’m sure hundreds of ideas have made it to the second round. I’ll make sure to post any news as soon as I hear anything.

Interviewing the Top Diggers

Interested in a….

Q & A With Social News’ Top Submitters

Well. Look no further than the latest episode of the Drill Down.

“Wired Magazine & NewAssignment.net columnist (and top Digg & Propeller submitter himself) David Cohn turns the tables on Andy, Mu & Reg as he asks them the social news questions you wanted answered
in this 75-minute Q & A interview. What secret weapons do they use to submit? Whatâ??s their stance on gaming the systems? Where do they think Social News is headed? Listen & find out!”

I haven’t listened to it yet myself, but I should mention that the beginning of the podcast began with all four of us expressing mutual respect in all directions. I tried to ask hard questions, but in the end I have tons of respect for Muhammad, Andy and Reg as diggers and general all around dudes.

I hope to come back on the Drill Down again — next time not as a moderator asking them questions, but as the person that they interview — perhaps about crowdsourcing or citizen journalism.

Knight News Challenge Away!!!!

I have been telling all my friends/colleagues to apply to the Knight News Challenge.

I have spent nights up thinking about it. Instead of winning the lottery, I have been dreaming about winning the Knight News Challenge.

Two of my ideas have already been submitted.

Just in case I don’t win — but somebody wants to donate some money to see these projects happen, they are…

CopyCamp.Us: Copy Camp With Us

and

Spot Journalism
(The more ambitious of the two proposals)

I eagerly await the word of my Knight Foundation overlords.
I am hopeful, but realistic — I’m sure they will receive hundreds, if not thousands, of good applications in the next day or two.

If you have feedback — let em rip.
If you have a moment to vote on my stories – please do (but I don’t think voting has anything to do with the success of applications).

Shecky’s New York and San Francisco

The Following is a paid review. Regular readers might be stunned by this. Don’t worry, it won’t become a regular thing.  I’m curious about different revenue models – BlogAds, ReviewMe, WPI’s Blog Ad Network etc. Part of this was from the discussion on revenue at the Networked Journalism Summit and part of it is because I want to try entrepreneurial things myself one day. So, why not start as a participant. All that disclosure out of the way — the review below is my honest assessment. I don’t actually know anybody from Shecky’s so I don’t care if they succeed or fail. And don’t think for a minute that I’m getting enough from one post that I can take the rest of the week off.

According to the website "Sheckyâ??s is the multi-platform media company keeping you city-savvy and
in-the-know with a focus on nightlife, fashion, beauty, and everything
fun. Dedicated to daily-brewed online content, Sheckyâ??s also hosts
wildly popular events across the country."
