A belated question, regarding the YouTube "how to do citizen journalism" video channel and a conundrum.

The knee-jerk advice to citizen journalists is "be tenacious, never give up".

The knee-jerk dismissal of self-proclaimed citizen journalists is "most of them are crazy".

This creates a problem; we should not be telling crazy people "be tenacious, never give up". So, perhaps we should be telling citizen journalists "be tenacious, never give up - unless you're crazy, in which case please don't be tenacious, and do be willing to give up"

But even this instruction has a problem, since if the citizen journalist does investigative journalism, the investigative target typically won't appreciate tenacity, and so will convey to the citizen journalist "go away, give up, you're crazy".

In the face of this feedback, how can our citizen journalist make an informed decision on whether tenacity is appropriate?
