@Andrea
I can't disagree with anything you say. Agreed re: #6 of know your market. In the first draft of this post that was actually something I had brought up in relation to True/Slant. This did feel like it came from people that hadn't zenned out fully on the state of the news business.

But upward and onward. Good luck at Forbes!

good analysis, dave. we had a few conversations in the true/slant office about newstilt. we were interested in anyone entering the news space; like you, i believe there isn't a single solution. experimentation is what matters. when i looked into newstilt i remember being surprised that they were claiming to be the future of journalism when neither founder had any journalism experience. i believe they were both on the tech side (am i recalling correctly?). i would add that as point #6: Know Your Market; credibility is key. and ultimately, i felt they were working with a faulty assumption: noise --> attention --> funding. they needed add'l funding, and instead of buckling down and building a product they went for the blustery talk. hot air doesn't get you funding.

to succeed, i think you really do need a blend of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. newstilt showed us that if you just have half of that equation the windmill will knock you down.
