Thanks for being honest about the tradeoffs - as you said, it's not all roses. I didn't realize journalism professors were working on incorporating entrepreneurial aspects into their teachings, that's fantastic news! It's great to see a less "traditional" path being emphasized, with all its upsides and downsides.

That's something I've been turning in my head lately, too. Working in experimental or entrepreneurial anything means that you're always on call. Spearheading is definitely liberating in terms of the creative latitude and possibility, but balance is essential for long-term sustainability of that creativity. It doesn't take long to adjust to being on-call, but it is as essential as it is difficult to carve out time for activities that nourish you, to be a whole person.

Absolutely. I especially agree with #3 -- I am also at a startup and each day that goes by, I feel less qualified to jump into a reporting job. Although I'm working with news, I miss having the tasks of writing and editing being the larger part of my day. I don't regret a thing, but definitely a trade-off to be aware of.

Your system should probably be based on Markdown as your way of writing things. Markdown works perfectly for displaying as text.

What would be cool though is to find something that can transform markdown into something even more text friendly, with like annotations for the links or something.

Starting at Google+ is a bad idea. Someday, who knows when, they will have a write API. At that time you will want to start from your blog, the origin of content, to start the chain.

Personally, I love octopress.org, it's been the easiest blogging platform I have ever used. I am a engineer though, so, mayby that's why.

@Bill - I jokingly call us combined the (S)PIN - but I don't think that name will stick ;)
