A quick interview with M.G. Siegler from VentureBeat, also from ParisLemon.
M.G. is another person on my long list of digital friends/acquaintances who I’ve wanted to meet in real life (a list that has grown dramatically because of Twitter).
I wanted to talk with M.G. about his dive into journalism, which from what I could tell was post his activity on Digg. That contrasts nicely with my dive into Digg which was because I wanted to sharpen my tech-reporting. Either narrative fits into my theory that
- Reporters need to use social news sites
- Contributing to a social news site is an act of journalism.
We also talked about Twitter. I’m neck high in my love affair with Twitter.
Finally: M.G. talked about some higher level issues – whether or not these types of tools will ever translate to reporters whose beats are far outside of tech. I tend to agree with him, it might not be this year, but as we live our lives more and more online (and as the younger generations grow up and do this as second nature) reporters whose beats are education, health, diversity, you-name-it, will need to know how to report using these digital tools.
As for the video itself: I know it’s dark. I had a choice between doing the interview outside in the dark or inside where it was too loud. I’m pretty sure I made the right choice.
