  • This is a good post on the economics of content. The problem is – the tricks of the trade (which Jason has identified) are traits of tech-startups, not newspaper companies. So a higher level question is – how can we get news organizations to start acting and thinking like tech startups?

  1. You’re right that I’m talking about strategies that are popping up in the tech startup sector, but I think the gap between those new companies and the newspaper industry is smaller than people realize.

    They are competing to hire the same talented developers & content producers.

    The difference is largely mental. I think it’s a matter of getting management to recognize that the market has up and MOVED, and it’s not coming back. Once that gets through, you HAVE to innovate, otherwise you’re giving up.
