When I worked for Wired I was in charge of elsewhere’s — links at the bottom of the site that should lead to other interesting and timely articles. 
Through this process, finding stories to write about myself and just general surfing, I have become a regular fan of many sites. I have followed a variety of them through their growth. I remember when World Changing was just starting out. Today, one Webby award latter, it’s considered one of the most acclaimed blogs on the web. You grows up – and you grows up.
So how about I take some time to shine light on a niche blog that I have liked for a long time. I’ll start with Defense Tech, edited by Noah Shactman.
Here’s the deal. I’m not a big guns/military guy. In fact, anything that causes general destruction is not my cup of tea. My mom says nice Jewish boys don’t join the military. But it’s undeniable that technology is changing the way wars are waged, reported and understood. This rapid evolution requires and deserves a good journalist like Shactman to inform the public.
Noah has done a great job of tracking that change. He’s written for a vast array of publications which I hope to one day duplicate (except for Tech Central Station, I’m skeptical about that site for reasons I’ll post later). Defense Tech is a great niche site for journalists who want to know what’s going on in war or for military enthusiasts.
Journalists like Noah or Chris Mooney display clarity and rigor in their work because they have focused on their respective areas almost exclusively. This creates informed pieces with clear copy that is easy to edit.
But don’t take my word for it. Take a look, Its in a book, a reading rainbow!
