Open Source Journalism, or journalism that uses crowd sourcing — an interesting and cutting edge concept. (read post below).
To think about this, I have an open question: What is a story that cannot be told by just one person. What kind of topic requires the expertise of hundreds of people?
My best example: No Child Left Behind Act.
It’s impossible for one reporter to find out what happens to all these kids. But through crowdsourcing, it could be possible to get the larger picture — what happens to these kids who go through the program. No single reporter could uncover this big picture. But a crowd with enough passionate people could.
Organizing that crowd is another story. My question is — what other kinds of stories could be covered with this means. Subject matter is no limitation. It could be a sports story, science piece, local politics etc. It doesn’t even need to have the huge civic nature to it — as long as it shows how open source journalism could accomplish something that a regular reporter couldn’t.
Any ideas? Send em my way.
two thoughts:
one, where in the hell does the date show up on your blog?! i never know how long ago you posted so i don’t know if my comment is -totally- outdated (luckily my google reader shows it).
two, an idea for open source, maybe something about media consolidation? different scenarios happening at various big media corps and the experiences of ppl working there – i.e. firings, hirings, regulation… i dunno …

i suck for posting twice, oops, but for comment #3, check out this link: http://www.buzzmachine.com/index.php/2006/09/22/good-for-reuters/
Seems like the best subjects would be those that benefit from the breadth of proof citizen journalists could provide, particularly with photo-based supporting evidence … Hungary riots, global warming’s effects, drilling in ANWAR.
