Interesting Finds: Oct. 20, 2015

A long time ago there were two types of bloggers “linkers and thinkers.

I liked to do a bit of both. But Twitter, Facebook and email newsletters has eaten away from the linking. There’s barely any true link-blogs left these days (NEVE LEAVE US KOTTKE!).

I could join the cool newsletter trend. But there is something that just doesn’t feel right about that to me. I hate to call it ‘elitist.’ But it’s certainly closed off somehow. And besides – anyone can subscribe to my blog via email already (if that’s your preferred medium). Click here – or the red “Get Blog Via Email” button which you should see in a widget on the right side of this site.

Are these going to be daily? I don’t know. But I certainly come across great reads/finds daily. So why wouldn’t I share them? I used to do this via Delicious, and then those bastards cut off an easy way to port it. But, I’ve come up with a new system. Let’s see how this goes. Let me know if you like these kinds of posts or not.

  1. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with sharing, but I subscribed to your blog because I considered it high signal/noise, and at a posting frequency I could handle. Your link posts change that. If you were using a system of tagged feeds that would allow me to follow the tags/topics I wanted, it would be easy for me to adjust. But with your new frequent link posts I don’t really know what to do with it.

p.s. I love kottke.org — but he doesn’t post lists of links. Each post on his site is focused on one thing (but might pull in a couple others if they are related) and comes with enough writeup to give you a sense of what it is and why he finds it worth sharing. It’s a great approach 🙂

  2. Hi Charlie

Fair point. In truth – I hadn’t really thought about what current readers might or might not be into. And truth be told – blogs are really not the place to get links anymore.

Maybe if this is a scratch I really want to itch: I need to find a different place to do it. Maybe this is why/where newsletters come from?

    Thanks for the feedback.

  3. The obvious place to share links is probably twitter, although the description you can include is obviously limited.

I’ve often struggled with ways to keep the signal/noise high when there is someone whose content I like but whose posting frequency is high.

I think what I want is an option in a feedreader (feedly in my case) to “turn down the volume” on a feed. Then if a feed gets noisy, instead of reaching for the “unsubscribe” button, I can just nudge the volume down a bit, like you might turn down the heater control a bit in your car. Then the software can decide (based on good metrics hopefully) which posts to hide.
