Current TV: My Idea Came to Life

A couple months ago I posted about a water assassin game that lasts for three weeks in different cities. When I tracked it down, it was taking place in San Francisco. So I told my friend Keith at Wired to pitch it.

While I’m told the office thought it was a cool idea, they decided not to run with it. But my buddy, in all his resourcefulness, got together with his roommate, Jason Tongen, to create a segment for Current TV.

I haven’t seen the edited film yet, but I went out with the guys when they filmed a bit (I was visiting in SF). My old roommate from Berkeley (who works on documentaries) was the cameraman. I tried to get in the background of one of the shots, so if you do see the current tv segment on the water assassin game, keep your eye out for me while their “training.”

Even more interesting than this, is a possible story I want to do on Current TV for Columbia Journalism Review. I’ve talked with the editor of the “scene” section and he has expressed interest in it too. Essentially I would tag along with what they call a VC2 contributor (a regular person who submits a clip) and write about their new angle and experience with journalism. The problem, of course, is finding a VC2 contributor in New York. Current TV itself isn’t really able to keep track of everybody, so it might be a bit of a process. (If you know of anyone working on a Current Clip on the East coast, holla at me)

But I am happy for my friends who have a clip playing at Current. I also take a little joy in knowing that I helped get the ball rolling on it. But most of all, I’m excited for when this water assassin tournament hits New York again, I think I’ll try and sign up. I was great at 007 on Nintendo 64 back in the day.

(pics hopefully to come, if not — it’s cause I’m too busy)

  1. I have seen this ‘water gun’ film you speak of and, I must say, the cinematography is nearly orgasmic. That cameraman friend of your’s has got the whole ‘gaze’ thing down. Sesh.
Also, while I can’t vouch for Oliver’s skill at Bond, you are good, like scary good.
