The Portrait is Alive

Ferris Bueler’s Day Off, a great film indeed, has one scene that sticks in my mind like gum sticks to the roof of my mouth. It’s that scene where Ferris’ best friend begins a freak-out sesh while starring at the pointed dots of a Seurat painting. Meanwhile Ferris is busy macking it to that burnette that could have had Marisa Tomie’s career.

I love pointillism. If only because I know the artist went through hours of suffering to make something that so many people will overlook. It gives me inspiration to continue pounding away at this blog — knowing that most won’t even make it to this, the second paragraph.

Seurat’s famous pointed painting is held in Chicago, the museum
where Ferris and his friends went when they ditched class that
fatefully filmed afternoon.

Well, Chicago has it’s Sunday Afternoon in the Park and now the town of Beloit Wisconsin has their version — except it took place on a Saturday.
The image you see is a real-life recreation of that famous Seurat
painting. A creative idea, that probably required the patience of
random volunteers.

From the news story that covered the event:

"Beloiters brought to life the famous painting by
the French artist Saturday afternoon in an effort to promote an August
event planned by Friends of Riverfront. And while people were
positioned similarly along the Rock River, Beloit’s version of Seurat’s
work had its own flair."

It
wasn’t an exact replica — their version took into account the style of
2006. But I have to give it to those crazy Beloiters  errrr
Beloitinites, they sure are a creative bunch.
