I have always been a fan of the Sunlight Foundation. In fact, while trying to brainstorm names for my next project “community funded reporting,” I began by trying to figure out what I loved about their name “Sunlight Foundation.”
That turned into “Spotlight,” but when every variable URL of “Spotlight” was taken – I shortened it to Spot and found the .us extension to become “Spot Us.” But that is indeed the how the name came about.
Sunlight has been doing fantastic work since they launched in 2005, winning weblog awards and paving the way for networked journalism.
At the Netsquared conference I spotted Ellen Miller and wanted to do a quick interview, mainly to find out what guiding principles are in place that allow them to blaze such a trail. The main mantra I heard was: invest in people and innovation.
But don’t take my word for it…..
